I personally love this aspect of YNAB and have opted not to import my transactions- I enter everything manually and keep a close eye on my budget. It can import transactions from your bank automatically, but you still need to approve and categorize them, nudge your money as it comes in, and monitor your budget to cover any overspending, ensuring you’re following your plan or adjusting if needed, etc. It’s not a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. This is NOT a con for me, but may be for you if you don’t like the manual entry of your spreadsheet, but YNAB is very hands on budgeting. The method combined with the app are amazing. In terms of pros and cons, my pros would be that it’s helped me to understand the effects of my spending choices, expedite my debt repayment, save for things that are important to me, and feel confident in my financial decisions. The app itself is amazing, but the four rules are what makes it work to truly gain control your money and to help you ensure you’re spending money on the things in life that are most important to you. YNABs four rules are what makes it especially great. I also never felt accountable to my budget in a spreadsheet. You can include home expenses, daily living, entertainment, health, recreation, children, business, and even pets. This one gives you one large sheet to track everything in your home each month. The spreadsheet was an okay guide to follow each month, but it didn’t help me prioritize my goals or lifestyle preferences. As an alternative to a family budget, take a look at this household budget planner template. The spreadsheets sort of worked, but I was never able to get ahead, save for anything meaningful, nor make a significant dent in any of my debt. I am new to YNAB, but budgeted with spreadsheets for YEARS before making the switch.
